Villa Description

Mismaloya's newest and brightest jewel is Villa Mandarinas. This architectural masterpiece cascades down six beautiful tiers of native vegetation, dramatic cliffs and colorful gardens overlooking the beach and cove where "The Night of the Iguana" was filmed. Originally named "Las Peņas" (the boulders) in 1541 by Captain Don Pedro de Alvarado, the Los Arcos Island Preserve looms impressively off the shore of Villa Mandarina. Considered the centerpiece of the best views in Banderas Bay, Los Arcos stars as the highlight of every vista in the home.

When you turn into Villa Mandarina's beautiful stone driveway, you are invited to enter the estate by the fluid and graceful opening of the soaring accordion garage doors. Made of honey colored primavera wood, these doors are only the first example of the innovation and beauty this estate holds. When you pull through the doors and park at the zenith of the cliffs of Mismaloya, you are greeted by the best view you have had on the entire journey.

Soaring ceilings and conjoined great rooms open onto terraces, bedrooms, landings and patios throughout the house and the myriad variety of windows and glass doors. The cathedral like openness makes the absolute privacy of the home that much more surprising. Four custom made hand blown chandeliers complement the loftiness of the home and accent the home's custom furniture elements. The chandelier in the dining room hovers below the ceiling illuminating the one of a kind sabino wood table carved from a single tree which can seat 16 guests. The stairs, made from beautiful dark stained haya wood, act as the visual hub of the home. The base of the stairs below flows organically into a massive boulder bisecting the kitchen and dining area from the main living room.

Each of the seven master bedrooms has a spectacular view of the bay with individual private terraces shaded by bamboo which gracefully compliments the colors of the estate. The unique features of each master bathroom speak to the creativity and artistic inspiration of Villa Mandarina's designers. In one bedroom a half ton sink has been carved from a volcanic boulder so massive that the piece was installed and the room was built around it. Two of the master bathrooms share a single monolithic boulder stretching through two floors to bind the rooms with the natural elements of the land. In another master bathroom, a custom window offers a graceful curve of etched glass that accents the view of Los Arcos across the bay.

Villa Mandarinas offers its guests an amenity unique even in the community of Mismaloya - the ability to arrive at your destination from the land or the sea. When you approach the estate by water, the home's earthy and vibrant colors draw your eye from miles away. The property's dramatic castle walls rising to the terraces, gardens and lawns above grow more and more impressive as you pass Los Arcos and continue over the water to the estate. As you step off the boat onto Villa Mandarina's private pier the final chapter of the estate's story is presented to you as the first. A private beach on one side of the property balances itself against a spacious natural salt water pool on the other. These features are completely unique and are an expression of Architect Alberto Alvarez's vision of what a home this amazing deserves.

The nature of this home is such that words and pictures can only offer a suggestion of the homes unique beauty, location and the inspiration of its architect and designer. Those who are fortunate enough to visit this estate will come away with a true understanding of what it is to live "La Pura Vida"

  • Puerto Vallarta was once a sleepy little town where the locals made their living without tourists, timeshares or even an airport. Visitors were so infrequent that the locals could tell you how many were in town on any given day. Strangely enough, Puerto Vallarta's tourism boom did not come from Puerto Vallarta at all but from Banderas Bay's most coveted jewel, Mismaloya.

In 1963 John Huston's "The Night of the Iguana" was filmed using Mismaloya's virgin coasts and unspoiled jungles as a backdrop. John Huston once wrote that he was the only person who cared for the place; he was of course, very wrong. The legend surrounding the production and the many twists and turns of the cast's romances while filming had Americans flocking to theaters in droves, turning once unknown Puerto Vallarta into the dream destination for millions of Mexico's Northern neighbors. The incredible influx of tourism over the years changed Puerto Vallarta into one of the world's most popular vacation destinations, and while Puerto Vallarta grew, the people who wanted to retain the ambience and feel of Banderas Bay's once virgin coastlines rediscovered Mismaloya's beauty and tranquility. While Puerto Vallarta's landscape and terrain allows for more and more expansion, homes in Mismaloya are rare. Most of Mismaloya exists in a single tier walking inland from coast, to home, to the road and finally to the Sierra Madre mountains.
